Ivory Coast today - Attack: UN, French forces fire on Gbagbo bases in Abidjan

Uploaded by on Apr 5, 2011

The United Nations and French forces opened fire with attack helicopters Monday on the arsenal of Ivory Coast's entrenched ruler, as columns of foot soldiers finally pierced the city limit. The fighters aiming to topple Laurent Gbagbo after a decade in power had succeeded in taking nearly the entire countryside in just three days last week, but they faltered once they reached the country's largest city, where the presidential palace and residence are located. Monday's offensive marked an unprecedented escalation in the international community's efforts to oust Gbagbo, who lost the presidential election in November yet has refused to cede power to Alassane Ouattara even as the world's largest cocoa producer teetered on the brink of all-out civil war.

Plot
In ancient times in India there was a time when children got married and then when the time comes they live together. This film surely tells the story of that marriage and tells it greatly. The show is set in rural Rajasthan and portrays, among other prevailing social ills, the practice of child marriage. It features Anandi (Avika Gor), married at age 10 to Jagdish (Avinash Mukherjee), the only grandson of Kalyani Devi. Kalyani Devi is a strict conservative matriarch of a traditional Rajasthani family. She has two sons, Bhairon (Anup Soni) and Basant (Satyajit Sharma). Basant, the elder son, is a widower. Gehna (Neha Marda), daughter of parents heavily in debt to Kalyani Devi, is forcibly married to him. Initially, there are many differences between the couple due to the age gap and incompatibility but they have a son named Nandu. Bhairon, the second son, is married to Sumitra (Smita Bansal) and has two children, Jagdish and Suguna (Vibha Anand). Suguna, also a child bride, loses her husband Pratap (Jehangir Vakil) and is made to follow the hard life of a widow at the tender age of 16. She later marries Shyam (Vikrant Massey) in the face of much social opposition. Suguna's in-laws, Radha (Asmita Sharma) and Madan Singh (Amar Sharma) initially do not accept her but later realise their mistake and become loving towards her. Anandi's parents, Bhagwati (Bhairavi Raichura) and Khajan Singh (Chetanya Adib) earn their living by farming. However, they often face problems but are always helped by Bhairon. Badi Jiji (Farida Jalal) is Kalyani's elder sister who is extremely kind and she lives in Kolkata. Mahavir Singh (Rajendra Gupta) is Kalyani's elder brother-in-law who harbours a grudge against her and tries making life for her family hell. However, he later realises his mistake and goes to jail as a punishment. He is actually Basant's real father but Kalyani raised him as as her elder sister-in-law requested her to do so. Teepri (Sakshi Tanwar) is a childhood friend of Bhairon and Basant. She is madly in love with Bhairon and tries to break the entire family. However, it is revealed that Teepri has a problem and she is taken away to be treated. The show thus tries to throw light on social malice like child marriage and the ostracising of widows prevalent in rural areas through the various travails of its characters. Anandi and Jagdish got separated when Anandi turned 13. Anandi went to her village and stayed with Bhagwati as her father, Khajan Singh was sent to jail for selling false items. He realised his mistake and wanted to repent for his crimes.

On July 22, 2010 the show took a five-year leap. Anandi and Jagdish are shown as grown-ups and eventually replaced by new characters. Bhagwati is re-united with Khajan Singh, now a good man. Anandi returns to Jagdish's house but she will have to face Kalyani who has become more tyrannical than ever. There are also problems between Basant and Gehna. Gehna rebels against Kalyani's wrongdoings and gets punished by her because of this. Shyam's uncle, Ramacharan purposely injures Suguna's son Varun and he is unable to walk. However, he gets exposed and is thrown out of his haveli by Madan Singh, his younger brother. Mahavir Singh returns to stay at Kalyani's haveli, now a reformed man. Jagdish decides to become a doctor. Kalyani disapproves of his decision and forces him not to go. However, Anandi helps him to escape. This infuriates Kalyani who declares that there is no relationship between her and Anandi much to everyone's shock. Jagdish faces ragging as a serious problem in his new college. He must fight his seniors with the help of Gauri (Anjum Farookhi)- a new friend of his at college. They become increasingly close. Meanwhile, Anandi's best friend Poolie (Mamta Chaturya) is becoming extremely lonely. She was widowed at a very young age and is therefore ostricised. She craves for a life partner which leads her to write love letters to herself. The villagers believe that she is disgracing them by dating a boy and she is told never to leave her house again. Kalyani forbids Anandi to ever meet her again. Anandi agrees to these terms though she does not believe that Poolie can do such a thing. Because of how clever Gauri is Jagdish is taunting Anandi because she left her studies and therfore is very ignorant. This is hurting Anandi a lot. Anandi meets her former teacher Sandhya (Sadiya Siddique) who is saddened by how Anandi gave up her studies. She tells Anandi that she has realised that child marriage is a sin and that she is trying her best to stop it. Sandhya tells Anandi that she wanted her help but realises that Anandi is too weak. Anandi begins to realise her mistake. Now, she saves her friend Gulli from what she had to got through which made her what she is now. She also proves that Poolie is innocent. Sandhya is extremely proud of Anandi. Basant and Gehna leave their differences aside and become close to each other. Anandi continues working to the betterment of society. Meanwhile, Jagdish and Gauri keep getting closer to each other. This soon turns into passionate love. Anandi discovers this on a trip to Mumbai, where Jagdish tells her that they both live in two different worlds and greatly insults her. He also introduces her as a distant relative to his friends. Anandi decides that she is going to resume her studies (she had given them up to keep peace with Kalyani). Her decision is supported by Bhairon and Sandhya. However, once more, Anandi will have to face Kalyani as an obstacle to reach her goal. Anandi exposes how Jagdish pretends that he is from a rich family in Jaipur, and that his status is single. Everyone is heartbroken, but they forgive him. The story progresses five years ahead. The distance between Jagdish and Anandi has increased. He is now madly in love with Gauri, who is actually the girl whom he had nearly married to by Kalyani. Jagdish and Gauri become doctors. He comes to Jetsar for a visit, where everyone discovers how he has forgotten his values and how to respect elders. He wants to settle down in Mumbai, far away from his family. This deeply upsets Bhairon, and Kalyani. He also insults Shyam, who tries to persuade him to stay back. This prompts Suguna to slap him. Even though Gehna and Basant reprimand him for being rude to Shyam, he remains indifferent. He then heads to Jaipur, where he plans to meet Gauri and head to Mumbai for his higher studies. Meanwhile, Bhagwati and Khajan Singh come to know of Jagdish's intentions. Bhagwati says that it is Anandi's duty to accompany Jagdish to Mumbai, and stay with him. However, Anandi says that she does not want to go to Mumbai with Jagdish, and is happy where she is with her family.

This one guy has it right in my opinion. What do you think?

"Lunch Break" trailer - in UK Cinema Release Date: Friday 8th April 2011 - Directed By: Sharon Lockhart

Uploaded by on Feb 26, 2011
Sharon Lockhart

Sharon Lockhart is well known for her formally strict and conceptually precise films and photographs that often explore social subject matter. As much as her photographs reveal cinematic qualities of staging and casting, so too do her films frequently engage a static camera and angles that recall photographic practices. To create the works in Lunch Break, Lockhart spent one year in Bath, Maine, at the Bath Iron Works shipyard—a private sector US naval shipbuilding company—observing and engaging with workers during their daily routines. The resultant film installations and series of photographs focus on the activities of these workers during their time off from production.

Lockhart’s work in this exhibition crosses boundaries and complicates distinctions between film, photography, and documentation in provocative ways. Her visual representations are devoid of sentiment and yet deeply humane, intimate in their focus on everyday situations while reflecting broader global conditions through their historically grounded approach. Created within the political and economic context of global capitalism in the twenty-first century, in which the industrial working class of the United States is shrinking if not disappearing altogether, Lunch Break captures a moment in time that may soon become a thing of the past.

Sharon Lockhart: Lunch Break is curated by Sabine Eckmann, director and chief curator, and is on view from February 5 to April 19, 2010.

"Foo Fighters: Back and Forth" trailer - in UK Cinemas Friday 8th April 2011 - Directed By: James Moll

Uploaded by on Mar 25, 2011

"FOO FIGHTERS BACK AND FORTH" chronicles the 16 year history of the Foo Fighters: from the band's very first songs created as cassette demos Dave Grohl recorded during his tenure as Nirvana's drummer, through its ascent to their Grammy-winning, multi-platinum, arena and stadium headlining status as one of the biggest rock bands on the planet.

Produced by Nigel Sinclair ("No Direction Home: Bob Dylan", "Amazing Journey the Story of the Who", "The Last Play at Shea") of Exclusive Media Group's Spitfire Pictures, and produced and directed by Oscar(r) and Emmy(r) winner James Moll, "FOO FIGHTERS BACK AND FORTH" culminates with the making of the band's new album "Wasting Light": a process in which the band pushed itself forward by going fully back to basics and recording in Grohl's garage completely on analog tape. No computers, no software - just a band recording an album to tape in a garage. The new record also marks the Foos' first full-length effort with legendary producer Butch Vig, with whom Grohl worked on Nirvana's classic album Nevermind.

"...the documentary film, serve{s} as a great reminder why the Foos deserve to be ranked among the world's greatest rock bands. For proof, check out "Back and Forth." -- Jim Harrington, San Jose Mercury News

"FOO FIGHTERS BACK AND FORTH," will be followed by a performance from the band, playing their new album "Wasting Light" front to back.

Coming to cinemas around the world in April.

"Cold Fish" trailer - in UK Cinemas Friday 8th April 2011 - Starring: Makoto Ashikawa, Denden, Mitsuru Fukikoshi, Megumi Kagurazaka, Hikari Kajiwara

Plot

Shamoto runs a small tropical fish shop. His second wife, Taeko, does not get along with his daughter, Mitsuko, and this worries him. He also feels somehow unfulfilled and dissatisfied with what his life has become. One day Mitsuko is caught shoplifting at a grocery store. There they meet a friendly man named Murata, who helps to settle things between Mitsuko and the store manager. Since Murata also runs a tropical fish shop, Shamoto establishes a bond with him and they become friends; Mitsuko even begins working for Murata and living at this house, to avoid conflicts with her stepmother.

What Shamoto doesn't know, however, is that Murata hides many dark secrets behind his friendly face. He sells cheap fish to his customers for high prices with his artful lies. If anyone detects his fraud or refuses to go along with his money-making schemes, they're murdered and their bodies disposed of by Murata and his wife in grisly ways. Shamoto is suddenly taken in by Murata's tactics, and by the time he realizes that Murata is insane, and a serial killer who has made over fifty people disappear, he is powerless to do anything about it. But now Mitsuko is a hostage at Murata's home, and Shamoto himself has become the killer's unwilling accomplice.

Meanwhile, the murders, without any trace of the bodies, continue unabated. The police have long suspected Murata and try to get information about him from Shamoto; Murata quickly senses the danger and threatens Shamoto not to report anything to the police. Shamoto has no choice but to obey Murata's order. Cruel murders gradually cripple his mind and finally the ordinary man is driven to the edge of the abyss.

"Before The Revolution" trailer - in UK Cinemas Friday 8th April 2011 - Starring: Adriana Asti, Francesco Barilli, Allen Midgette, Morando Morandini, Cristina Pariset.

Uploaded by on Mar 22, 2011

Bertolucci's brilliantly assured second film is very loosely inspired by Stendhal's The Charterhouse of Parma, a novel the director adored. The story centres on the emotional and political conflicts within a young man, Fabrizio, who is contemplating joining the Communist Party. But his personal life is even more unresolved, as he breaks away from his planned marriage to a perfect bourgeoise and becomes incestuously involved with his alluring aunt (Adriana Asti). Bertolucci's obsession for politics and cinema is openly expressed through this alter-ego and in the extraordinary freedom of his camerawork and editing. There are heartfelt allusions to the history of filmmaking - a cinephile friend cries out 'One cannot live without Rossellini', while an erotic love scene echoes Jean Vigo's L'Atalante - as well as to the city of his youth, with a climactic sequence at the opera that is breathtaking in its sweep and intensity.

The digital print will be released nation-wide on 8 April 2011.

"Armadillo" trailer - in UK Cinemas Friday 8th April 2011 - Directed By: Janus Metz Pedersen

Uploaded by on Jan 13, 2010

Una delle opere più belle degli anni '60. L'inizio del film: Parma, la borghesia, i versi di Pasolini, la musica di Ennio Morricone, l'incapacità di scendere a patti col proprio destino.

Synopsis

The film starts with the soldiers' last days in Denmark before leaving for Afghanistan. Scenes include their emotional goodbyes as well as a party with a striptease dancer.

They are posted for a six month tour at Armadillo, a military base in Helmand province, Afghanistan, where some 270 Danish and British soldiers are based.

The film shows the soldiers going out on patrol. They hand out candy and gifts to the children. They question a local man about the Taliban who declines to cooperate and they return to base without incident.

The film depicts them as dividing their leisure time between maintaining their equipment and working out, calling home, playing 'shooter' computer games and watching pornographic videos amongst other things.

Later in the tour the soldiers encounter armed resistance from the Taliban. In the ensuing battles buildings are damaged and locals report livestock killed. Some locals receive compensations from the base.

A Danish commander becomes a victim of a roadside bomb and is evacuated to receive treatment for a skull fracture. He recovers and returns to Armadillo. Three Danish solders from a neighbouring camp die in an IED incident and the film records a memorial service for them. Directly following this there is a discussion questioning whether ambushing the Taliban will work and subsequently volunteers are recruited for a night patrol.

At dawn civilians are seen fleeing the area. The patrol comes under fire and a soldier is hit. In the ensuing chaos it transpires the Taliban position is directly in front of the patrol in a ditch only 3 metres away. A hand grenade is tossed into the ditch followed by the order to 'neutralize them' and subsequent sporadic gunfire is heard. Five Taliban are killed and there are graphic scenes of their bodies being pulled from the ditch and stripped of their weapons. Finally there is a concluding air strike.

Back at base the patrol congratulate each other on the morning's work and there is a debriefing with accounts of four Taliban found in the ditch groaning heavily being liquidated 'in the most humane way possible' and the remaining Taliban trying to crawl away being 'finished off' with 30-40 shots.

Subsequently it transpires that a soldier has called home discussing the episode with his parents and has given them the impression that wounded Taliban had been liquidated and that the soldiers had laughed about it at the debriefing. The parents have contacted the Danish Command about it and the commander addresses his men about the issues that raises. There is an ensuing debate amongst the men.

Later two of the soldiers on the patrol are awarded medals and the film concludes with scenes of jubilant homecomings and a return to civilian life. The final scene is of an introspective commander taking a shower.
